No Going Back Home, 200 Ghanaian Football Fans Request Asylum in Brazil
There is no going back home for some of these Ghanaian football fans.
Brazilian federal police say that 200
Ghanaians have requested asylum after entering the country on tourist
visa to watch and be part of the 2014 World Cup experience.
The Ghanaians claim they are muslims
fleeing inter-religious conflicts in their country. They have filed
applications in Caxias do Sul.
Police also revealed that 1000 more
Ghanaians are expected to request refugee status once the tournament is
over. They are all believed to be looking for rights to work legally in
the country.
“Asylum cannot be requested at a
Brazilian embassy. The asylum seeker must be in the country to apply. We
have hundreds of Syrian refugees in Brazil at the moment in the same
situation.” revealed an officer.
